Background of the Study

Cloud computing refers to the delivery of computing services—such as storage, processing power, and software—over the internet. This model provides businesses with the flexibility to scale their operations quickly without the need for significant upfront capital investments in IT infrastructure (Ogunleye & Ibrahim, 2023). For Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which often face resource constraints, cloud computing offers an affordable way to enhance scalability, improve operational efficiency, and access advanced technologies without the overhead costs associated with traditional IT solutions (Oluwadamilola & Yusuf, 2024).

In Sokoto State, SMEs play a significant role in the local economy, yet many struggle with the challenges of scaling their businesses due to financial and infrastructure constraints. Cloud computing presents a promising solution, but the adoption rate among SMEs in Sokoto State remains low. This study aims to investigate the role of cloud computing in enhancing the scalability of SMEs in Sokoto State, exploring its benefits, challenges, and impact on business growth.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential benefits of cloud computing, many SMEs in Sokoto State have not fully adopted cloud technologies due to factors such as cost concerns, lack of awareness, and perceived complexity. As a result, these businesses face difficulties in scaling their operations to meet growing demands, which hampers their ability to compete in a rapidly evolving market (Akinyemi & Alabi, 2023). This study will explore how cloud computing can address these challenges and enhance the scalability of SMEs in Sokoto State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the role of cloud computing in enhancing the scalability of SMEs in Sokoto State.

2. To identify the benefits and challenges of adopting cloud computing for scalability in SMEs in Sokoto State.

3. To examine the impact of cloud computing on the growth and competitiveness of SMEs in Sokoto State.

Research Questions

1. How does cloud computing enhance the scalability of SMEs in Sokoto State?

2. What are the key benefits and challenges of adopting cloud computing for scalability in SMEs in Sokoto State?

3. How does the adoption of cloud computing impact the growth and competitiveness of SMEs in Sokoto State?

Research Hypotheses

1. H₁: Cloud computing significantly enhances the scalability of SMEs in Sokoto State.

2. H₂: The adoption of cloud computing presents both significant benefits and challenges for SMEs in Sokoto State.

3. H₃: Cloud computing adoption has a significant positive impact on the growth and competitiveness of SMEs in Sokoto State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on SMEs in Sokoto State that have adopted cloud computing. Data will be collected from business owners, IT managers, and employees of these SMEs. The study will be limited to the SMEs' use of cloud computing for scalability and may not consider other IT solutions.

Definitions of Terms

• Cloud Computing: The delivery of computing services via the internet, including storage, computing power, and software, typically on a pay-as-you-go basis.

• Scalability: The ability of a business to expand or contract its operations and resources to meet changing demands.

• SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises): Businesses with a relatively small workforce and revenue compared to larger corporations.
